AREAS AFFECTED: Alger; Luce; Delta; Southern Schoolcraft; Northern Schoolcraft

DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 3 feet, locally higher amounts up to 4 feet possible. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph, particularly along the shorelines of the Great Lakes. * WHERE...Alger, Delta, Luce, Northern Schoolcraft, and Southern Schoolcraft Counties. * WHEN...From 5 AM early this morning to 8 AM EDT Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Travel will be treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Widespread blowing snow and heavy snowfall rates will significantly reduce visibility. Strong winds could cause tree damage and result in power outages. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Heavy snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour are expected much of the day today. Strongest winds late this afternoon into Monday.

INSTRUCTION: Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to their surface.

Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation similar to situations which produce snowfall.

Hole Punch Clouds Next Topic: Mammatus Clouds

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.

When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific to any geographic area.

Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole, skypunch, and cloud hole.
